Turnovers
In the first half, the Terps struggled with UNLV’s amoeba-like 1-1-3. They turned the ball over 15 times in the first half. That led to 17 Running Rebels points and was the primary reason why UNLV was up 30-27 at halftime. Maryland only had five turnovers in the second half.
Rebounding
Terps won the battle of the boards. That helped offset the turnover problems. Maryland had 46 rebounds compared to UNLV’s 34. Plus, the Terps took advantage of their offensive rebounds. They grabbed 16 offensive rebounds. That led to 18 second-chance points.
Pharrel Payne
Payne being back in the lineup after the scary fall against Marquette was a sight for sore eyes. Payne was dominant in the second half, where he scored 16 of his 20 points. Maryland made it a priority to get it to Payne in the second half against the zone. The Terps shot 50% from the floor in the second half because they prioritized Payne getting touches, and they reduced the turnovers.
